What Is Cold Laser Therapy?
LASER is an acronym meaning Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. At Shephard Health we use the most advanced laser system on the market: the Bioflex Low-Intensity Light Therapy Laser. The laser is a painless stream of monochromatic light which is used to treat musculoskeletal injuries as well as chronic and degenerative conditions. It works at the cellular level, allowing cells to produce more energy, in turn promoting healing. As light energy is transformed into biochemical energy in the body, the blood supply to damaged cells is increased and the healing process is stimulated. This is accompanied by relief of symptoms.
This process is curative, with no known negative effects, and normally functioning cells are not adversely affected by this process*.
How Is It Performed?
The laser uses a complex computer program, as well as low-intensity laser diodes, or ‘light plates’, to treat injured tissue. Velcro straps hold the light plates of the laser in place on your body. The light source is placed in contact with the skin, allowing the photon (light) energy to penetrate the tissue. Here it interacts with various intracellular biomolecules to restore normal cell function and enhance the body’s healing processes.
Our laser system is operated by a certified kinesiologist who has undergone extensive training in the use of the Bioflex system.
Who Should Consider Having Laser Therapy?
If you suffer from any of the following acute or chronic conditions listed below, laser therapy may be the solution for you.
- any form of muscular injury
- joint pain (i.e. low back pain, TMJ dysfunction)
- ligament or tendon tears
- arthritis (rheumatoid and osteo)
- repetitive stress injury (i.e. carpal tunnel syndrome)
- inflammation of tendons, bursae, muscle, or fascia (i.e. plantar fasciitis)
- calcification’s (i.e. bone spurs)
- post surgical scarring (orthopedic, cosmetic)
- scar reduction
The number of treatment sessions will vary depending on your condition, however, the progress of laser therapy treatments* are cumulative, and 5-12 treatments are typically required.
Manual therapy is recommended as a complementary therapy to laser therapy, as it can speed the healing process by breaking down adhesion’s, increasing muscle mobility and increasing arterial and lymphatic circulation. ART and Graston Technique are the most effective manual therapy methods used in conjunction with laser therapy.
